Excellent detector for under $150 August 28, 2010

I recently bought the Bell V955 and must say it works excellent for the price. Yes, you can find ones with more features and questionable longer range, But not anywhere near $150.00. My only complaint is the voice announce of the radar band, which is quite annoying. Thankfully, I found you can turn it off. Buy this if you want a inexpensive, quality detector.

Just received the unit about a week ago. Do mostly highway driving in Nevada.. Picked up State troopers b4 I even saw them, even on the turns .. Great range..360 all around..
I'm sure others at double the cost are more efficient, but this is a good bang for the buck..I'd recommend it contrary to others reviews I've read..

I bought the unit to replace a 40 dollar Cobra unit that failed after a year. Tested the unit with a 2000 mile road trip right off the bat, and have been using it in the city for the last month.
1. The range is poor, I would say no more than 1000 yards when set on highway, even less when set to auto detect. At any rate it doesn't inspire confidence as it generally doesn't pick up a speed trap until maybe a second before it is in view.
2. The window mount is ok, not great, and the power cord is short and coiled, very overt.
Overall I regret buying it, poor performer compared to my old Cobra and cost 3x as much. I would have been better of buying a new 40 dollar unit every year.

I bought this radar detector for husband when his job and commute changed. I was looking for a mid-priced one and feel the V955 is perfect for our needs. It has warned my husband several times of upcoming police cars, and he believes has already saved him a ticket. He uses the suction cups on his window, which is great, but when I have tried to put it in my Honda Odyssey the location of my lighter and the tightness of the cord does not allow the detector to sit up on my dash. It does fit nicely in the glove box and I have placed it in my purse several times, as it is very light weight. We do recommend this product.

I bought my 955 a month ago and have used it on the highway and around town with good results. Some of the reviews on here scared me a bit after ordering, but I figured I'd go for it anyway. Other than a lot of K band alerts on the highways here in Maine, which do auto-mute well, thank goodness, it works well and seems to detect KA band very well. (hadn't been hit by lidar/laser yet) The windshield mount works fine in my NIssan Altima, no problems with failure due to heat, even though this summer has been in the 90's a few times. I wish it had a regular volume control know or slider, but once you get used to adjusting w/ button, it's okay. Overall, works very well for the price, don't be scared off by some of the reviews unless you have really high expectations. (and likely should be looking at a more expensive model or brand) Nice so far !
